Grubbs, joint recipient of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the development of the metathesis method in organic synthesis. This timely publication focuses on developments in the synthesis of natural products which use as a key step the versatile metathesis reaction catalysed by transition metal complexes, especially ruthenium. While reference to metathetic pathways in obtaining natural products or their mimics is encountered sporadically in many books and articles which primarily deal with metathesis as a catalytic process, to the best of our knowledge this is the first monograph devoted entirely to a systematic treatment of metathesis applications in natural product synthesis. The field has direct relevance for the drug industry, and currently receives a great deal of attention due to the pharmacological activity found in many natural compounds. Therefore, this volume promises to be a very helpful resource.

Application of olefin cross-metathesis to the synthesis of biologically active natural products.
An overview of the use of olefin cross-metathesis in the synthesis of biologically active natural products is presented. The diverse examples are organized according to the outcome of the olefin constructed by the cross-metathesis reaction: this olefin can be either present in the final product, reduced, engaged in other transformations, or involved in tandem processes.

In the past two decades, alkene metathesis has risen in prominence to become a significant synthetic strategy for alkene formation. Many total syntheses of natural products have used this transformation. We review the use, from 2003 to 2015, of ring-closing alkene metathesis (RCM) for the generation of dihydrofurans or -pyrans in natural product synthesis. The strategies used to assemble the RC...
متن کاملα-Allyl-α-aryl α-Amino Esters in the Asymmetric Synthesis of Acyclic and Cyclic Amino Acid Derivatives by Alkene Metathesis
Allylating agents were explored for the asymmetric synthesis of α-allyl-α-aryl α-amino acids by tandem N-alkylation/π-allylation. Cross-metathesis of the tandem product was developed to provide allylic diversity not afforded in the parent reaction; the synthesis of homotyrosine and homoglutamate analogues was completed. Cyclic α-amino acid derivatives could be accessed by ring-closing metathesi...

متن کاملConcise enantioselective synthesis of (K)-lasubine II
An enantioselective synthesis of the quinolizidine alkaloid (K)-lasubine II 1 is reported. Two different pathways to the key intermediate 2 are described. The first case involving a sequence of ring rearrangement metathesis (RRM), simple functional group interconversion operations, followed by a stereoselective cross metathesis (CM) and in the second case a domino ring opening-/ring closing-/ c...
